Project Overview
Assessed seasonal river flooding dynamics along the Shabelle basin to design engineering and eco-system-based flood mitigation interventions.
The Challenge
Recurrent seasonal river bursts destroyed standing crops and displaced thousands of farming families annually.
Project Objectives
1. Map high-risk overflow zones. 2. Formulate community-led riverbank maintenance plans. 3. Establish early warning protocols.
Our Approach & Activities
Combined GIS remote sensing, hydrological modelling, and deep community consultations across 24 riverine villages.
Key Activities Executed:
GIS topographic mapping & elevation hazard analysis
Disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategy drafting
Capacity building for local water committees
Key Results & Impact
✓Produced high-resolution flood vulnerability atlas covering 120km of river basin
✓Standardized Early Warning Trigger matrix adopted by local disaster management bodies
Broader Community Impact: Provided humanitarian and development partners with actionable blueprints to safeguard over $4.5M in seasonal crop output.
